PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS

STUDIOWERQ (Hazel Park, MI) — 2017 – Present

Creator/contributor

STUDIOWERQ is an organization I created to bring arts programing into neighborhoods at a local level. Currently operating in Hazel, MI, STUDIOWERQ offers open studio tours/experiences, workshops, creative consulting and other services. Our open studios are meant to act as a version of a free public space, like a library or (sometimes) a museum. Our main goal to enrich local areas by providing free art experiences that are aimed at building communities, particularly marginalized and underserved groups on the LGBTQA+ spectrum.

This past year, 2019, my organization has had the opportunity to do amazing things in an around Hazel Park. In March we facilitated multiple free workshops aimed at trans and gay people through Affirmations, including an entire day of programming at the Trans Day of Artivism. We were involved with  the Neighborhood Service Organization of Detroit and had multiple artists not just donating work but live painting at the event, the proceeds of which went back to the NSO to support their services. We built a playground at a park here in Hazel Park and then organized volunteers from the neighborhood to paint murals and decorate the structure. Several artists from my organization also participated in the Michigan Glass Project, where we created work that was then auctioned off for charity (Art Road Detroit). I personally volunteered to teach art workshops at Camp Talahi, a camp experience exclusively for trans kids. Our organization volunteered to run a full day of drop in workshops with visiting children at the Hazel Park Art Fair. I also partnered with a local non profit to create a totally unique meditation event that combined nature and drawing to create a one of a kind mindfulness experience.

While doing all of that outreach and community service we also ran a full schedule of low cost workshops and rented out our space multiple times to queer artists in need of studio space. It was truly a fantastic year and I am so proud of my organization. In the future I plan on partnering with more groups and bringing even more low cost of free events to the community.

Trans Day of Artivism (Ferndale, MI) — March of 2016 and March of 2019

Organizer/Featured Artist

The Trans Day of Artivism is an all day event that occurs in March. Previous events have been held at the Affirmations Community Center in Ferndale, MI. The Trans Day of Artivism is an all day cultural event that features the art and music of exclusively trans creatives. Artists and musicians from all over the country convene and share their unique perspective on the world through their art. As an organizer i worked closely with a group called Transcend the Binary to create this event. It is truly a one of a kind experience that changes both participants and guests lives.

The Hive (Ann Arbor) — 2013 – 2015

Arts Manager

The Hive, an artist collective based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, was created in 2013 by Thomas Ulch, a professor at Eastern Michigan University and myself. As Arts Manager, I was in charge of emceeing events, recruiting artistic talent for the group, and producing/selling my own art. The collective was made up of both artists and musicians, and we held multiple festival-like events at a warehouse property in downtown Ann Arbor. Our group appeared at several well-known events in Ann Arbor, such as Top of the Park, Hash Bash, and regular concert events at the Blind Pig.

Intermedia Gallery Group (Eastern Michigan University) — 2007 – 2009

President — Winter Semester 2009

The Intermedia Gallery Group is the organization responsible for coordinating a student-run gallery in the Student Center at EMU. As a member, I helped plan/present shows, guard the gallery, create advertisements, and organize group events (including fundraisers and membership drives). As president I organized show schedules, interacted with professors and other staff members regarding gallery operations, and ran meetings with other title holding members of the organization.
